Moffatt to defend triathlon title

AUSTRALIAN Under 23 representative and former local Emma Moffatt has indicated that she will defend her title at this year's Bananacoast Credit Union Woolgoolga Triathlon to be held on Monday.

Moffatt recently finished fourth in the World Under 23 Olympic Distance Triathlon in Japan which means that she is in great shape for this event which is on familiar ground for the erstwhile Safety Beach resident.

A number of other Australian representatives in various age groups have also nominated with Yamba's Ray Hunt a good bet in the 60-64 age division if he can shake off a persistent virus.

His performance in last weekend's Blueberry hill Duathlon would seem to indicate that he is in recovery mode.

Another frequent podium finisher at National titles Ernie Sykes from Coffs Harbour is a regular winner at Woolgoolga while Anne Grundy and Lyn Fulton, both multiple Aussie champs find themselves in the same age group, the 55-59.

Grundy holds the honour of the best best age group placing by a Coffs Harbour Triathlon Club member in the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon which Fulton will be contesting this year in a fortnight's time.

An exciting prospect for outright honours in the men's field is Macksville's Rick Laverty who had an impressive win in the Blueberry Hill Duathlon last Sunday.

On the team front a number of keen local businesses will be vying for the Chamber Pot Challenge trophy with the G.L.Abbott & Co outfit facing a strong challenge from the Five Star Supermarket trio.

Entries will be taken up to 6.30 am on Monday morning with the briefing to follow immediately as the aim is to have the field ready to start on the dot at 7am.

Those already entered should have registered and racked their bikes by 6.30am as well.

Motorists are warned that the large number of cyclists on Beach Street and Lake Road will make alternate routes most desirable between 7.15am and 9am.

Intersections will be staffed by members of a number of the local Rural Fire Brigades who will appreciate courteous co-operation from the general public.

Further enquiries should be directed to Steel Beveridge on 6656 2735 or Mal and Lesley Pitts at Woodsey's Wheels on 6654 1217.
