Macksville celebrating title hat-trick

By STEVE ARCHBOLD

CHEERS echoed through the dressing rooms as Macksville captain-coach Paul Davis sat back taking in a remarkable performance by a very special football side. As he started to take off his strapping, Davis was flooded with back pats, handshakes and congratulations from players, officials and supporters making it difficult for me to get a word in edgeways. In the midst of horn blowing, the club song and victory chants it was sheer pandemonium, the kings of Group 2 rugby league were still on their throne. If there was any reason for a King of Macksville to be appointed this would certainly be the occasion. A few years back, Macksville were wallowing on the bottom of the ladder, their season coming to an end without winning a match. Maurie Lonergan started the turnaround before Chris McDonald and then Paul Davis took over to mould a team of exceptional quality. Enjoy the moment, Macksville, you deserve it.
