Local youngsters attack Rusty Gromfest

MANY claim that the Rusty Gromfest is the biggest and most prestigious grommet comp in the world and starting today, the breaks of Lennox Head will be host to some of the world's finest young surfers.

There's a strong contingent of locals riding the waves in the event, with five of them competing in the under-16 boys' section.

Coffs Harbour pair Jarwin Carey and Alex Swadling will be joined by Corindi's Michael Curnow, and a pair of Sandy Beach grommets in Jayke Piggott and Alex Maniatis.

Throw Mark Merrikin from Woolgoolga into the under-12 mix and there's no shortage of Coffs Coast representation over the weekend to tackle some of the biggest names in junior surfing.
