Local beaches win regional awards

By KUE DAVIS

ARRAWARRA, Sawtell and Jetty beaches were all recognised in the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Clean Beach Challenge Regional Awards yesterday.

The Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Clean Beach Challenge is a state-wide program that recognises work on anti-litter initiatives, dune and habitat conservation and initiatives that generally enhance the beach visitor's experience.

The three local beaches were recognised in the ceremony, which was held yesterday at the Coffs Harbour Surf Life Saving Club.

Arrawarra Beach won the Packaging Stewardship Forum Resource Management Award, and was Highly Commended for the Energy Australia Friendly Beach Award.

Sawtell South Beach won the Alcoa Litter Prevention Award, and Jetty Beach was awarded two Highly Commended awards community action and environmental protection.

"Members are so dedicated to making the beach environment clean and attractive for the public; it's nice for that to be recognised," Jetty Dunecare member Jane Ireland said.

Chief executive officer of Keep Australia Beautiful Australia, Peter McLean, said that the Clean Beach Challenge was important not only in recognising the hard work of community members, but to expose each group to new ideas.

"Groups can pass on information about their practices, and others can learn from it," he said.!

Dunecare is always looking for more volunteers.
