Lisa?s a ?hero
MULLAWAY mum Lisa Owen has been hailed a hero after rescuing three people from a rip this week.
Her efforts are considered so exemplary that she will be nominated for a meritorious action Australia Day award.
Lisa has only been learning to surf for 18 months but that didn't stop her from grabbing a malibu board and dashing into the surf at Mullaway Beach on Monday.
"Sure, it was probably brave, but it's something I would do normally," Lisa said.
"I don't see it as a big deal. When I realised people were in trouble, I just took off.
"I saw they were trying to swim against the rip and I knew they weren't going to be able to do that."
Jenny Moon, who lives near Lisa, was one of those who were rescued.
"I was out on my boogie board and got caught in the rip," Jenny said.
"A man nearby saw I was in trouble and swam over, but he told me to get rid of my board and he'd pull me in. That was a mistake, as we both got caught.
"Another guy saw us and said 'hang on to me and I'll get you in', but he wasn't a very strong swimmer, so we were all being swept out.
"Then Lisa saw what was happening and came out with her board. She got us to hang onto the board and kept us calm as we drifted.
"All the time, the waves were breaking over us and we all lost the board at one point. But Lisa said the rip would peter out and it did when we got to a sandbank. The others pushed the board across the current and I laid on it and we were able to get back in. If she hadn't been there we could have drowned."
