Last quarter blitz

North Coffs 120

Nambucca Valley 34

A FINAL quarter blitz from North Coffs has created a result that wasn't a true indication of the match with Nambucca Valley.

Half way through the third quarter, the Lions had all the momentum and managed to get within 12 points of the reigning premiers.

A steadying goal from Brad Giri late in the term seemed to quell Nambucca's challenge and from that point on, the match was all one-way traffic.

Early on the lauded Kangaroos midfield was struggling to get on top of Luke Benson, Trent Baade and Daniel Linares.

A physical approach at the ball and a short possession game into open spaces was working well for the Lions but the game plan must have proved energy sapping on the wide open spaces of Advocate Park.

In the last quarter, centre breaks from Brad Giri, Jason Bencich and Greg Jarman proved decisive as suddenly the Roos went on their merry way.

Nine unanswered goals for the term including six from Darren Funston was the icing on the cake for North Coffs.

Lions' playing-coach Jimmy Angel was disappointed with the way the final margin blew out to 86 points.

"We were right with them for three quarters and playing good football," he said.

"Then to lose all that good work in the last quarter was disappointing.

"But we've proved that we can match it with the good sides when we play at our best."
