Kean comes close

By BRAD GREENSHIELDS

IT was a story of so near yet so far away for Coffs Harbour surfer Billy Kean in the Quiksilver Australian Junior Surfing Titles.

Kean was eliminated in his quarter final of the blue ribbon under 18 Boys division to finish in ninth place overall, going down to the event favourite and former ISA World Junior Champion Owen Wright.

The new left bank that formed over the past couple of days at Waitpinga Beach near the South Australian town of Victor Harbor combined with the excellent five foot beach break waves created perfect contest conditions for all contestants to show their worth.

Try as he might though, Kean was unable to overcome the white hot form of Wright who burst out of the blocks by taking to the skies and locking into the occasional barrel to advance to the semi-finals.
