K-Mart on way

By LEE McDOUGALL

K-MART is coming to Centro Toormina shopping centre ? or so some of those in the know will have us believe.

While the rumour mill has been in overdrive in recent months, Coffs Harbour City Council's Economic Development Unit manager Megan Dixon confirmed the rumours at Thursday night's council meeting.

In addressing the council on the draft Coffs Harbour Retail Strategy (see Monday's Coffs Coast Advocate), Ms Dixon stated that K-Mart was definitely coming to Toormina.

"It is common knowledge that Centro Toormina has signed an agreement with K-Mart," Ms Dixon said.

However, while Ms Dixon appeared confident that K-Mart was a done deal, the NSW manager for Centro, Mr Peter Turner, was playing his cards a little closer to his chest.

"There has been no lease signed," Mr Turner said.

"It is common knowledge that we are committed to developing Toormina, but we are reluctant to say anything at this stage because plans can change. We are continually negotiating with all our majors (retailers), but at this point in time it is too premature to confirm anything."

If Ms Dixon proves to be correct and K-Mart does open at Toormina, it will further demonstrate Coles-Myer's commitment to the Coffs Coast.

In December, Coles Moonee Beach opened its doors, marking a substantial investment of more than $2 million for the company.

Coles Moonee Beach resulted in the creation of 110 new staff positions, including five management trainee roles.

"The store is an investment in the people of the region," store manager Samantha Williams said of the opening.
