Joske claims maiden win
RANKED as Australia's number two junior, Nambucca Heads surfer Heath Joske posted his maiden under-21 win with an emphatic victory over South Africa's Shaun Joubert in the final 2007 Billabong Pro Junior Series Indonesia event at Canggu Bali.
The 18-year-old had his rhythm flowing from his opening eight-point ride in the wind affected five foot reef break waves to set the pace for the entire 25 minute final.
Using precise but radical big front-side vertical snaps Joske left his 16-year-old opponent to play catch-up until the final siren of the inaugural 2007 series.
"I'm over the moon. To get a victory here in Bali in really good waves is perfect," an elated Joske said.
"Defeating an international field of such good surfers feels great."
The natural footer went from strength to strength with his two highest wave scores of nine and an 8.83 giving him a heat total of 17.83 (out of a possible 20) to Joubert's 14.73 heat score.
"After I got that eight it gave me that much more confidence in the final to just go for it," added Joske.
Along with the $US2200 winners cheque, Joske also claimed the overall 2007 Billabong Pro Junior Series Indonesia Title despite only contesting two of the three Series events.
His equal third placing in the opening Keramas Bali contest and his Canggu victory saw him outpoint number two ranked Mustafo Jeksen (Bali) by 161 points for the crown.
"I didn't even know that it was possible for me to take the Series so it makes the whole win just that much more sweeter," said Joske.
In his semi-final, Joske eliminated Sunshine Coast surfer Dale Lovelock 18.10 to 15.70. Twenty-year-old Lovelock posted the best result of his junior career with his equal third placing.
Australian surfers dominated the three-event 2007 Billabong Pro Junior Series Indonesia with Julian Wilson (Sunshine Coast winning the opening Keramas event, Coffs Harbour's Madison Williams claiming victory at Kuta Reef and Joske victorious at Canggu.
