John passes over his way

GLOBAL Carnival founding organiser John Richards lost his short, intense battle with cancer on Saturday night.

His partner Bryony Taylor said: "John passed over at home after the most challenging journey of his life."

"He travelled with the same tenacity and determination that we know him well for. He did it his way, with strength and his family and friends supporting him."

Mr Richards was diagnosed with lung cancer shortly after Christmas and had been undergoing treatment.

In March, organisers postponed this year's Bellingen Global Carni- val, which would have been celebrating its 11th year.

Ms Taylor said John's tireless committment to music and community events meant the legacy he left behind was indeed large.

"John loved people and he truly wanted to make a contribution to the world. He leaves behind a very big hole for his family and friends," she said.

He is survived by seven children and a grand-daughter, Scarlett, born last week, whom he had the opportunity to hold.

Friends are invited to a Buddhist service and gathering starting just before noon at the family home on Saturday.
