James wins in Classic style

LOCAL up-and-coming surfing star star James Athorn made the waves his own to win yesterday's ninth annual Barney Miller Classic at Sawtell.

The contest was the biggest ever, attracting more than 100 participants.

Conditions were not ideal but that didn't stop competitors.

"The surf was average, but all up we ended up raising around $9000 for the Disabled Surfers Association," organiser Bryn Goode said.

A thrilled Athorn said: "I was pretty stoked. I've won a few things in the past two weeks, so I'm happy."

The Classic is held in honour of local Barney Miller, an avid surfer who became a quadriplegic in a car accident.
