Jake?s our first for 2006

JAKE Ball became Coffs Harbour's first 2006 baby when he arrived at 1.09am on New Year's Day.

Jake's mother Kelly and father Gavin Ball are both thrilled with their new baby boy, the first child for the Coffs Harbour couple.

Kelly Ball said Jake, who weighed 6lb8oz and measured 49cm on arrival after a four-hour labour, had surprised his parents by deciding to arrive very early. He was not due to arrive until January 25.

Kelly said thanks to Jake's early arrival, she had not managed to fit in any New Year's Eve celebrations this year ? or even get to eat dinner.

"I got to watch the Sydney fireworks on television in the hospital at nine o'clock and that was about it," she said.

Kelly Ball said she was taking a year's maternity leave from her job at Bunnings to look after young Jake, who already has a big fan in his new dad.

"The nurses have trouble getting Jake away when Gavin visits," Mrs Ball said.

Nursing staff at the Coffs Harbour Health Campus presented her with a big bunch of flowers to mark the year's first baby.
