In support of Bakers

By BRAD GREENSHIELDS

NOW that the inquiry into the horror race fall that claimed the life of Daniel Baker has been completed, the Coffs Harbour Racing Club is making a concerted bid to raise money for the trust fund that bears the popular jockey's name.

While the fund raising wheels have already been put into motion since the tragic moment on December 2, the finalisation of the inquiry has now opened the way for the major activity of the racing community's fundraising efforts.

A Trivia and Auction Night is being held at the Coffs Harbour Race Club on Thursday, February 7 with plenty of good times promised for those who attend, with great names from both racing and rugby league set to be in attendance.

Coffs Harbour Racing Club CEO Russ Atkinson's comments yesterday show that the entire Coffs racing community has become a closer knit unit through the tragedy and this is shown by the number of people willing to get involved in the organisation of the event.

"Everyone is trying to get behind the tragic loss and see if we can be of some support to the family," he said.

"We're trying to raise some funds for the trust which the club will be administering and has been formally set up so any donations can be appropriately handled for the long-term benefit of the family where Daniel would've been contributing."

Tickets for the Trivia Night are being sold for $40 per head with tables being made up of either eight or ten people.

If the table is willing to pay an extra $10 per head then they can have a Legend of League sitting on their table as a member of their trivia team.

"Everyone is wanting to help and get involved but the trick to the exercise now is to get some bums on seats, make sure the people there have a good night and raise some money," Atkinson added.

The $40 price for a ticket represents good value as the fee covers the cost of standard beverages, nibbles and prizes.

There will be plenty of auction items worthy of strong bidding and the club is still on the lookout for more items that people may wish to donate.
