ARE you serious?
That was the common response from Coffs Harbour High School's HSC art students on hearing that all but one of the class had work selected for the highly regarded Art Express.
"Everyone is over the moon. "It is something that you hope for, but don't really expect. To have six students selected from the one school is amazing," art teacher Jan Chivas said.
A touring exhibition, Art Express, showcases the best selection of artworks from the Higher School Certificate Visual Arts Examination, chosen by visiting teams of markers.
A motley collection of art, the six students drew inspiration from a variety of sources, each hoping to display a part of their personality.
Prue Allen, who hopes to attend Newcastle University next year, called her body of work 'everyone has beauty but not everyone sees it', gaining her inspiration for the sculptures from the different cultures in our society.
Daniel Benz took on a lighter issue, manipulating sporting equipment to render them useless.
Gathering at the school at the beginning of this week for a study session before their theory exam tomorrow, Ms Chivas said it was proving hard to keep the excitement down long enough to hit the books.
"This is a very big deal for these kids and a great achievement for our school. Everyone is so proud of them," she said.
And how did the students describe the feeling of being selected? In one word ? 'stoked!
