Hockey competition is a family affair

HOCKEY is a great family sport that can be enjoyed by all ages.

The Coffs Harbour Hockey Association has something to cater for everyone starting with our youngest group being Minkey.

Our Minkey hockey is ideally suited for children aged five to 10 and is great fun.

Each week children learn the basics skills and fitness before moving up to Under 11's.

Our Under 11's is a modified form of the game that is played with 8 players using a quarter field.

There are six teams of mixed boys and girls entered into Under 11's this year.

Under 13's is the next step up played on a full sized field and with a full sized team of 11 and this comp is currently a mixed one for boys and girls and we have 4 teams entered and are looking for more players.

Older age groups in our juniors are then offered for Under 15 boys and Under 16 girls as separate competitions.

We are really looking for additional numbers in these age groups, particularly our Under 16 girls.

All junior hockey is played at the one complex every Saturday morning using a combination of grass games and games on the artificial surface.

Seniors this year looks like being a great competition with six teams in women's A and for the first time in many years men's A grade has five teams.

Other competitons offered for women are A Reserve and B grade and B grade for men.

More players are still required for men's B grade.

Women's A grade is looking strong again with Bellingen, Legendz, Norths, Orara, Urunga and Sawtell nominating.

Men's A grade promises to be a great competition with Bellingen, Sawtell, Southside with two teams and Urunga entering this year.

State Championships are held at various venues throughout the State and we see a full calendar again this year for each age group.

Our first junior teams away are the Under 17 boys competing in Sydney and the Under 18 girls competing at Lismore both over the first weekend in May.

This year Coffs Harbour will host the Under 13 boys State Championships from July 1-3 which will see some 40 odd teams participate.

We will also host the University games from July 3-6.

Hockey is a great game to be involved in as a player or an official.

We have established a regular pool of umpires and run umpire clinics and training sessions.

Hockey also provides opportunities for officiating as a technical officer and as a coach, with nationally accredited courses regularly being run throughout the year.
