History making victory

HAS it been done before?

Probably not, according to records held by Sawtell Women's Bowling Club after minor grade players June Wetkin (skip), Noela Watt and Denise Faugeras captured the major triples title.

"We've looked in the archives and asked every veteran we could find but no one can remember the feat being done before," skip Wetkin said proudly.

"But I guess if it has been done this story will flush out the truth."

On victory day the "three amigos" took the game 22-16 with another remarkable fact pertinent to the runner's up.

"Not quite the same as us," Watt chimed in, "but their team comprised two minors with one major.

"Along the way we all beat major grade players to enter the final."

The trio are friends of long standing who've all returned recently to lawn bowls after extended breaks and it's their first victory at any level of competition.

"That's just about the end of our career as minor players," Faugeras laughed.

"But not the end of our defence of the title.

"Next year we'll go out to win the same way.

"Get in front early and make the chasers play catch up."
