WHEN Bellingen's Jess Fitzgibbon wandered into the Coffs Harbour Newsagency on Thursday to buy the Coffs Coast Advocate, she had no idea just how important the event was.
Ms Fitzgibbon made history on Thursday by becoming the one-millionth person to buy the Coffs Coast Advocate this year.
"This was an enormous milestone for the Coffs Coast Advocate," editor Lee McDougall said.
"It is the first time in our 98-year history that in one calendar year we have sold one million copies of the paper."
Ms McDougall said it was important to note that these were copies sold by the Coffs Coast Advocate and excluded the free Wednesday and Saturday distribution.
"Our paid circulation has continued to increase each year since we made the decision in 2000 to take the paper paid," Ms McDougall said.
"The introduction in March this year of our Monday edition has proven to be a huge success and helped contribute to reaching the one million milestone.
"Our Pacific Highway campaign this year has also been an important community campaign and as we move into 2006 we will continue to strive to be a community champion."
