Gotcha! Man charged with mall assault

A MAN accused of bashing an elderly man in Coffs Harbour's CBD has appeared in court.

Police arrested Keith Ward, 57, of Coffs Harbour, yesterday morning.

He was taken into custody at Coffs Harbour Police Station and was later charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Police refused Ward bail to appear later in the day in Coffs Harbour Local Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Judith Fleming adjourned the case to September 3.

Magistrate Judith Fleming also granted Ward conditional bail.

The alleged assault, which featured on our front page yesterday, happened in Harbour Drive on Tuesday about 11am.

The elderly man, aged 87, sustained a cut to his face and his glasses were broken.
