Girls in league of their own

By BRAD GREENSHIELDS

IN the movie 'A League Of Their Own', Geena Davis stars in a baseball competition that has only four teams but the Coffs Harbour baseball girls would love for their competition this year to have that many sides running around.

Two years ago a female baseball league was started up with only two teams.

Last winter the Dodgers, Bluesox and All Stars stretched the number of teams to three and in 2007 it's hoped that even more players will take to the diamond.

"It's growing, we'd just like to see it get stronger," publicity officer Melinda Phillips said.

"We've got two sign-on days coming up starting next Sunday. We're hoping some of the girls who play in the mixed comp will join as well as some of the softballers who play in the summer."

It's hoped that the move of the Saturday comp to the new baseball diamond west of the BCU International Stadium will also attract more players to the growing league.
