Get on your bikes says Councillor Hogbin

IAN Hogbin loves doing it, and he wants others to follow suit in Coffs Harbour. The city councillor is an avid cyclist, one of many to support yesterday's PedalPower Picnic Day at Toormina's velodrome to coincide with NSW Bike Week. Bike riders of all ages revelled in races, bike decorating competitions, games and activities. "The message is we've got to get more people on pushbikes. It's healthy," Cr Hogbin said. "We can teach kids skills to get around safely on our roads, and it's important to emphasise we shouldn't be beholden to the motorcar. "We've got to present opportunities so people feel confident on bikes. It's a great time of year to go for a ride, and we have some great new cycle paths." Cr Hogbin is encouraging residents to join the series of community bike rides which started in Coffs Harbour on Saturday, and which will continue over the next three Saturdays. They run from 6.30am in City Square and end with coffee or breakfast. Cr Hogbin started riding in 1994 and he has been involved in some big treks, including a 1200km expedition from Adelaide to Melbourne.
