Fun at family fishing festival
FAMILY fishing was the sporting flavour of the weekend on the water, with Mylestom's annual Putt Bennett Family Fishing Festival notching up an increase of more than 25 per cent in entries, signing up 587 competitors in the three-day competition, a new record for the organisers.
Champion family of the competition was Urunga's McLaughlan family with 41.65 points, followed by Repton's Larcome family on 40.34 points and the Kirkman family on 26.82 points. The competition raffle prize of a boat was won by Raleigh fisherman Mick Christian.
Committee member Rick Young said a total of 383 fish from nine different species, weighing a total of 111.2kg were caught by competitors.
He said more than 80 per cent of the fish caught were catch-and-release fish which were released back into the river at the close of the competition. This program saw 21.2kg of bream, 9.6kg of whiting and 18.3kg of flathead able to swim away to grow another day.
The Coffs Coast Advocate was a major sponsor of the Putt Bennett Family Fishing Festival.
