Fire guts kitchen



AN elderly man was treated for facial injuries after he escaped a house fire at Gleniffer's Forbes Close.

Yesterday's early morning blaze gutted the kitchen.

Firefighters from Sawtell Fire Station and Rural Fire Service brigades from Boambee and Bonville rushed to the scene after 2.30am and donned breathing apparatus to fight the flames.

An elderly woman in the house had heard a loud explosion from the kitchen, dialled 000, and dragged the man out of bed.

Along with the damage to the kitchen, the loungeroom had smoke and water damage, and both bedrooms were also covered in smoke.

Ambulance officers treated the man at the scene for injuries he sustained as he fled the dwelling.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

n In other news, firefighters were unable to save a Hyundai Excel which went up in smoke on Sawtell Road at Sawtell early yesterday.

Fire crews were called to a front yard at 4.15am. Police are continuing their investigations.

n Police closed the Pacific Highway at Boambee yesterday morning after a Toyota Camry caught on fire.

The blaze started in the engine bay as the car was driven south. Firefighters were called out at 9.23am to douse the flames.

No-one was injured.
