Dorrigo?s Alex Cork honoured

ALEX Cork epitomises the spirit of the community volunteer. The 77-year-old has spent nearly half a century with the Dorrigo Show and Recreation Reserve Trust, an extraordinary labour of love by any measure. Alex has spent countless hours with colleagues maintaining and improving the showground facilities, conveniently located next to his family farm. In fact, the property was used to stage the first two Dorrigo shows before the showground even existed. Alex, the current trust secretary who has held the post on and off for 24 years, was recognised for his sterling service at a Lands Department awards ceremony in Coffs Harbour last week. He was among more than 20 long-serving members of reserve trusts in the district who were honoured for their achievements. "This means a lot to me," Alex said. "Three years ago, I got an OAM for services to agriculture, the showground trust and junior sport, and this award means just as much. "It's been good. We've had a fairly good influx of members over the years." Alex figures the most rewarding aspect has been the valuable support from organisations in the township. "They have put in a lot of voluntary work. Over half the buildings at the reserve are there because of volunteer labour," he said. Lands Department acting regional manager, Tony Wiseman, said there were about 900 community trusts in NSW managing Crown reserves. "Trust members are imaginative and energetic people. They make a commitment to manage and preserve our significant public assets."
