Dog thieves strike again

By CRAIG McTEAR

PUPPY plunderers have again hit the jackpot in Coffs Harbour.

Their daring raid at the Discount Pet Warehouse in Mastracolas Road on Monday was hot on the heels of a similar robbery at the Coffs Harbour Pet Centre in Little Street on Monday last week.

Pet Warehouse business manager Nicole Wilson said the eight-week-old ridgeback cross mastiff bitch was last seen snug in her unlocked enclosure at 2pm, but was only noticed missing at 4.30pm.

"One of our staff asked me if I'd sold a pup and not done the paperwork, but that wasn't the case," Nicole said.

"I went outside looking under cars and under bushes, but she was gone."

The tanned-coloured microchipped pooch, with a white chest, had been on sale for $300. Her disappearance is now keenly felt, especially by her lonely brother.

"We're devastated. I find it really violating that someone can walk out with a puppy. This person has walked straight past the desk," Nicole said.

"They would have had to conceal the pup in a jacket, but it wouldn't have been an easy task because she would have been biting and squirming.

"What scares me is how is this person going to look after it now they've stolen it.

"I'd rather have it back and give it to someone who loves it and who's going to look after it."

This is the first time crafty crooks have hit the store, and management has alerted police, vets and the RSPCA to the crime.

Nicole said she'd heard about a similar theft in Grafton four weeks ago.

Perhaps the police dog squad would be ideal candidates to sniff out and hound the culprits.

nIf you saw suspicious activity at the Discount Pet Warehouse between 2pm and 4.30pm on Monday, you are urged to contact Coffs Harbour police on 6652 0299.
