Death on the tracks: Woman killed by train

By CRAIGMcTEAR

WHY was a young woman on the train tracks in Coffs Harbour on Tuesday night?

That question was no closer to being answered yesterday as police continued their inquiries into the death of a Coffs Harbour 21-year-old.

The woman was hit by a southbound Pacific National freight train just south of the Coffs Harbour Railway Station platform at 11.35pm.

She died from massive injuries.

The driver, 48, contacted police, who interviewed him at the scene.

Ambulance officers also attended.

Police said yesterday they were not sure why the woman was on the line. They are preparing a report for the coroner.

A Brisbane-bound Countrylink train was delayed for 80 minutes as a result of the incident.

Police did not release the woman's name yesterday.
