Coffs mental health boost

COFFS COAST residents will receive a major boost to mental health care with a new multi-million dollar facility to be built at Coffs Harbour Health Campus.

A total of $8.22 million was allocated to build the new 20-bed non-acute mental health unit in yesterday's State Budget, which delivered a record spend on health.

While the funding didn't come as a surprise, a spokesperson for the North Coast Area Health Service said it was always a relief to get confirmation.

"This has been in the planning stages for some time now. Tenders have been called in and are currently being assessed," he said.

"The unit will be an extension of the current mental health unit and is a significant development for the community."

He said the new unit was scheduled for completion in March next year.

The new service will assist in the overall management of inpatient care, with the aim to improve patient flow through the acute mental health unit at the hospital.

At present there are no facilities in the region that provide specialised rehabilitation for patients who have received mental health care.
