Coffs Harbour Beach, Rock and Estuary Fishing Club

A NEW season is upon us as we say goodbye to summer and hello to autumn, I for one can't say if I will miss those hot days and nights.

Winter's only a few months off now and it may be uncomfortable for some but that's when the best fishing is. That's not to say there weren't some excellent fish caught through the summer months.

The club's March comp is set down for today and the species are whiting, bream, flathead, surface fish and rock blackfish. Subs will be both mystery fish. You don't have to be a member to sign-on so come on up to the Fishing Club and put your name down by noon today and give it a go. The barbecue is free to all competitors and there's always a prize of some sort to take home.

There were some good bream and luderick around the rocks last weekend and on Sunday early I was heading over the headland fishing and two anglers were coming off it with one good jew around 15 kilos and a few nice schoolies. They must have put some hours in but it paid off for them. There's nothing like local knowledge but as with most keen fishos it's like getting blood out of a stone when you start asking questions.

According to a few fishos the garfish have not shown up close enough to be caught. Maybe it will take a few tuna and mackerel to chase them in out of the deeper water.

I have been told from a reliable source that March is a good jack month so we may have to give them a go and see if we can get our arms stretched. Anyhow that's it again, good fishing.
