Coffs airport on high alert

AN unattended bag sparked a security alert at Coffs Harbour Airport yesterday morning.

Airport manager Bevan Edwards said the bag had been left unattended near the tourist counter some time after 10am.

"One of my tenants reported it to security, who made an assessment and had sufficient grounds to call the police, who attended the airport," Mr Edwards said.

He said the terminal was not evacuated.

While the luggage did not pose an immediate risk to the public, it needed to be brought to the attention of police.

Mr Edwards was unable to give details on what was in the bag, or what happened to it once police arrived.

However, he did say that he often reminded his staff and tenants at the airport to be on the lookout for unattended luggage.

"We also have to convince our customers not to leave their bags unattended," he said.

Coffs Harbour police were not commenting on the matter late yesterday.
