City Hill fire could have been a catastrophe

COFFS HARBOUR'S iconic City Hill became a fire zone late on Tuesday.

And it appears arsonists are to blame.

Firefighters dashed to the hill at 4.38pm and discovered a large area of bush ablaze behind the Bunker Cartoon Gallery.

A pumper, a tanker and 14 personnel from Coffs Harbour Fire Station were on hand to battle the fire, which claimed up to three acres of scrub as it headed southeast.

Crews were at the scene for at least 90 minutes, but at no stage were any buildings under threat, according to Coffs Harbour fire brigade captain David Spagnolo.

However, it did burn to within 50 metres of the bunker.

Police say the fire was deliberately lit, and their investigations are now focusing on children who were spotted in the area just before the blaze broke out.

If you saw suspicious activity at the time, contact Coffs Harbour police on 6652 0299. Fire officers are reminding people to call 000 in the event of an emergency.

n In other news, firefighters are urging residents to take greater care around heaters during cold nights.

"Keep all materials at least one metre from any heater and never leave heaters unattended," a fire brigade spokesman said.

"Also remember that electrical cords on floors present a serious trip hazard."

Burn injuries can have devastating effects on victims, particularly elderly people.
