Carer couple who can?t help but help

ALL foster carers are special people, but one particular couple in Coffs Harbour has been honoured this week with an award in the Long Time Carer category of the NSW Department of Community Services (DoCS) 2006 Foster Carer Awards.

Brenda and John join winners in eight other categories who were selected from almost 200 carers nominated for the awards by their caseworkers.

This special acknowledgement of Brenda and John is part of DoCS Foster Care Week celebrations which end today.

Brenda and John have been caring for close to 20 years.

DoCS Northern Regional Di- rector, Susan Priivald said they were not only wonderful carers, but also provided insight and support to new carers just starting out.

"They have four children of their own, but their home has always been open to everyone over the years, from babies to teenagers," Ms Priivald said.

"Brenda has recently been dealing with some health problems and now that she is on the road to recovery she is already planning when to take the next young person into her home.

"This couple can't help but help and I am so happy they have been presented with this awards."
