Car fire victim had knife wound

A MAN found dead in his car at the Coffs Harbour Health Campus on Tuesday night appears to have died from a self-inflicted knife wound to his chest, police said.

Malcolm Gravestock, 54, originally from the Gold Coast, was believed to have been suffering from 'a number of mental health issues', according to investigators.

Fire crews were called to the hospital grounds at 7.45pm on Tuesday and discovered a Queensland-registered Ford Focus on fire in a grassed area beyond the westernmost carpark.

After extinguishing the flames, they opened the driver's side door to discover the man's body behind the wheel.

Acting Detective Sergeant Mick Dowden said investigators believed the fire, which damaged the car's interior, may have been accidental.

Mr Gravestock had also sustained burns in the incident, Sgt Dowden said.

A post-mortem examination was conducted yesterday in Newcastle.

"Police are not treating the man's death as suspicious," Sgt Dowden said.

"We are still preparing a report for the coroner."
