Cab trip ends badly

A 20-YEAR-OLD man remained in intensive care late yesterday following a dramatic chain of events at Toormina.

The ugly circumstances unfolded about 8.20pm on Saturday when five men caught a maxi-taxi from Sawtell to Toormina, police said.

The passengers left the taxi in Nilpena Close, where police believe the 20-year-old and the cabbie became involved in a dispute.

Detectives have been told the man punched the cabbie through the front driver's side window.

"The driver reversed the vehicle in an attempt to get away. As a result, the 20-year-old man sustained head, internal and leg injuries after falling under the moving taxi," a police media spokesman said.

Ambulance officers took the man in a critical condition to Coffs Harbour Health Campus, where he underwent emergency treatment.

His condition by late yesterday had improved to stable.

Investigators are now appealing for anyone who saw what happened to come forward.

They are urged to contact Coffs Harbour Police Station on 6652 0299, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
