Search personnel covered the waters between Macauleys Headland in the north to Bundagen in the south, as well as Boambee, Sawtell and Bongil Bongil beaches.
The search effort was to resume at first light this morning.
The experienced surfer, who was also a good swimmer, was catching waves on Monday afternoon with a group of friends at Sawtell Beach, in front of the surf club.
The teenager, who wore a wetsuit and flippers, was last seen riding a wave in pounding surf.
