Blood by the gallon

By BELINDA SCOTT

IT was veins ahoy at the blood bank yesterday as Coffs Coast residents began responding to the call to donate blood to top up supplies for the Australian Red Cross Blood Service.

The Service is calling for existing and new donors to step up to the mark and give blood because they have only two day's worth of supplies of some types of blood.

Australia needs 20,000 donations a week ? a million donations every year ? to keep up the supplies of blood and one donation can save up to three lives.

Among those lining up to donate yesterday were several people rounded up from the Coffs Coast Advocate's newsroom by editor Lee McDougall, following Tuesday's front page story on the need for blood donors.

Journalists Mitchell Dale and Belinda Scott joined photographer Bruce Thomas in the waiting room in order to demonstrate that we weren't afraid to do what we were so busy urging readers to do ? donate blood.

Appointments to donate blood are essential. Phone 131 495 to book your spot. The Coffs Harbour collection centre can be found at 72 Victoria Street, Coffs Harbour
