Award so humbling for Jack

By KUE DAVIS

JACK Spencer was humbled and honoured yesterday after being named the 2008 Sawtellian of the Year.

Mr Spencer, who has lived in Sawtell for more than 20 years, was proud to accept the award.

"I'm humbled and very proud to accept this award it's a great honour," he said.

The award, which was presented to Mr Spencer by Coffs Harbour Mayor councillor Keith Rhoades at the Sawtell Family Fun Day yesterday, is given annually to a person who has performed good deeds and work for the Sawtell/Toormina community.

Mr Spencer was more than a deserving recipient, having been the social secretary of the Naval Association of Sawtell, the social secretary of the Probus of Sawtell, and vice president and committee member of the Pensioners and Superannuants of Sawtell.

He has also been vice president and a committee member of the Area Council of the Mid North Coast Sawtell Branch, president, vice president, committee member and deliverer for Sawtell Meals on Wheels, president of the Mid North Coast Police Association of NSW and is a member of the Retired Police Association of Coffs Harbour.

Mr Spencer played down his contribution.

"The people of Sawtell are so humble; I just want to give what I can to help other people reach their dream."

"There's no chance I'd ever live anywhere else," he said.

"I've made my nest and I'm not going anywhere. You have to go a long way to find people like Sawtellians we're a breed of our own.

"This is so overwhelming; I didn't expect it at all. It's something that I'm going to treasure for the rest of my life."
