Another district title

By STEVE ARCHBOLD

AT the age of 64, Park Beach bowler Joan Humphreys felt the days of winning district titles were well behind her.

She had experienced a drought of seven years since she was last crowned district champion in 1998 and didn't believe she was playing well enough to win her third title.

"I honestly thought I was getting too old and past it and other people were playing better than me," Joan said.

In a competition where each match can be your last, Joan nearly fell at the first hurdle winning her opening encounter against a Dorrigo player 31-30 on the last end.

Joan progressed through to the semi-finals against close friend Barbara Schenkel before taking on Chris Sheridan from West Coffs in the final.

Chris, another former district champion and Joan went shot for shot before Joan eventually gained a break and won 31-23.

"I was able to get a bit of luck and things started running my way," Joan said.

Since arriving in Australia from England in 1990, Joan has been one of the most successful women bowlers on the Mid North Coast collecting district triples, pairs, singles and fours titles as well as a State triples with Park Beach colleagues Barbara Schenkel and Isla Donkin.

Joan's busy campaign was still in progress this week partnering Isla Donkin in the Mid North Coast district pairs.
