THE way results have been going for the Sport Aerobics girls from Empire Gym on the Jetty, it's hard to imagine that only six months ago the Coffs Harbour-based team barely raised an eyebrow among the more highly credentialled teams from around Australia.
Boy, things are different now.
Not only are the individual performances turning heads but now the team is getting involved after claiming gold medals at the recent FISAF national championships in Brisbane.
After finishing third at the state championships the girls admitted that they weren't very confident of performing well but coach Cassie Scully had other ideas.
"I always told them in training that 'You've got a routine that can win'," she said.
"They'd just look at me and they were like 'Yeah Cassie, whatever'.
It didn't take long though for the girls to get a sniff of victory after a solid opening performance had them sitting nicely in second place.
A strong finish was required to get them over the line and they delivered a routine that was exactly what the judges wanted to see.
"Their final performances was much better, a lot cleaner and the type of things we've been yelling at them at training they got right," the coach explained.
"They were coming second and the bit where they were going down was the aerobics and the need to get their knees higher and things like that.
"They did that and they came through and won it."
The disbelief and pure excitement that was on display from the team when the winners of their section was announced was something that had to be seen to be believed.
"When they got called out that they won, these girls were jumping on each other, tears, everything."
