A winning double

ROYAL Canberra trainee professional Damon Welsford has claimed the Mazda NSW/ACT PGA Trainee Championship by just one stroke from defending champion Alex Simpson.

Welsford finished the tournament held this week at Coffs Harbour Golf Club at nine-under-par with a final round of 69.

Simpson closed with threes straight birdies on 16, 17 and 18.

However, he fell one shot short of claiming back-to-back titles thanks to a regulation par by Welsford on the tricky 18th hole.

Ecstatic over his win, Welsford will tackle the Von Nida Tour and Australasian Tour over the summer in an attempt to add to his already impressive playing credentials.

"It's fantastic, in the first six months as a professional to claim both the New South Wales and Victorian titles is really amazing," Welsford said.

"I haven't really looked at the schedule but I'm hoping to play some bigger events later in the year."

In third position was Leonay trainee professional Gary Nightingale, who finished off a consistent week at five-under-par, with rounds of 71,72, 70 and 70.

The best-placed female in the field was Chrystal Woolridge, who finished tied in 19th place at five over par.
