A classic surfing event

By JACQUI LUMB

NOW in its seventh year, the 2005 Barney Miller Classic is the biggest contest on the North Coast surfing calendar with entries expecting to top 100 for the fundraising event. The original concept for the surfing event came from Miller and his good friend and fellow surfer, Joel 'Tubby' Bath. Miller was involved in a motor vehicle accident in April 1999, in which he sustained debilitating injuries which restricted him to a wheelchair. "For the last three years, at my request, the money raised has gone to people who have found themselves in a similar situation to mine," Miller said. This year the Classic will be focusing on a Central Coast local who was found washed up on rocks with minor neck injuries. He is actually a friend of Central Coast surfer, Sean Macgugan who last year was working at a surf school in Samoa and hit a reef, breaking his neck. He is now restricted to a wheelchair, however Miller hopes that it is only semi-permanent. "Sean was the focus of last year's contest and will be attending the competition again this year, bringing a whole crew of Central Coast locals with him," Miller said. Many companies have sponsored the event providing merchandise which will be up for grabs for competitors. Miller said that as soon as a company knew that the event was for charity, they jumped at the chance to give their support. This year the Classic will be held on the weekend of October 15-16 at Sawtell Beach, with a concert held on the Saturday night at the Toormina Hotel. 'Weekend at Barney's' will be a great night in between the two days of competition with four bands playing to an all age crowd. Local band 'Red Light District' will be playing, along with 'Dirty Pink Jeans', 'The Common Code' and 'One Jonathon' from down south. There will be a $12 cover charge for a great night of music with all welcome. The competition has many divisions, from Grommets, Cadets and Juniors, to Open Mens, Mal, and Women's Open and juniors. If you haven't signed up yet, grab your entry forms from all surf shops in the local area, at Park Beach Music and you can also download a form from www.barneymillerclassic.com Miller can be contacted on 02 6658 8919 or 0432 768 123 for further information.
