Budget answers for Coffs on way

KEITH Rhoades hopes to learn next month what Coffs Harbour City Council can expect from the Federal Budget.

The city’s mayor heads to Canberra in mid-June for the third Australian Council of Local Government conference where Cr Rhoades and his colleagues will meet Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Local Government Minister Anthony Albanese.

Cr Rhoades, who also chairs the Country Mayors Association, said he was pleased the Budget had maintained Financial Assistance Grants and continued the Roads to Recovery program.

The Budget provides about $1.35 billion to help rural and regional councils deliver basic services, maintain roads and upgrade community facilities.

There’s also $1.2b to maintain and upgrade road and rail infrastructure across the nation, including new funding of $1b to accelerate the modernisation of the interstate rail network.

“In addition, facilities in every country school are being rebuilt and we’ve started rolling out high speed broadband to the nation’s homes and workplaces,” Mr Albanese said.
