Answer the call of the wild on Muttonbird Island

AN OPPORTUNITY to learn more about Muttonbird Island and its namesake inhabitants is on offer on Friday night.

Gumbaynggirr elder and National Park Discovery ranger Mark Flanders is running his popular Muttonbird by Moonlight tour.

"Some nights the birds come in early and by the time we walk to the top of the island, they're already sitting all along the path and outside their nesting burrows calling in their eerie ghostly voice. It's a wonderful scene," Mark said.

"Other nights, when the sky is clear and the moonlight bathes the island in a silvery glow, the birds seem to wait at sea a little longer before coming ashore.

Bookings for the 1.5 hour tour, also on December 6, can be made by phoning the Dorrigo office on 6657 2309.

The tour costs $20 for adults, $10 children and $50 family.
