Coff's World Rally countdown

THE countdown is on for the World Rally Championships on the Coffs Coast and information sessions are now in full flight across the region.

Rally Australia organisers hosted three sessions at Coffs Harbour, Bellingen and Glenreagh last week and have another three scheduled for March 8, 9 and 10.

The sessions are open to all residents, business operators and community members and include details on dates, addresses and starting times.

They are designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the rally on shire and forestry roads, outline planning and approval processes and provide an opportunity for community feedback, including question and answer segments.

The remaining information meetings are at:

  • Macksville Council Chambers (44 Princess Street) on March 8 at 5.30pm.
  • Nambucca Entertainment Centre (Ridge Street) on March 9 at 5.30pm.
  • Grafton Cathedral (16 Duke Street) on March 10 at 5.30pm.

Staged for September 8-11, the World Rally Championships was relocated from the Northern Rivers after a sustained campaign against the event.

The race is expected to inject $15 million into the local economy in a single event.

The Coffs Coast has played a major role in Australian rally history, hosting many competitive stages of the famous International Southern Cross Rally in the 1960s and 1970s and more recently, regularly hosting a round of the Australian Rally Championship.

The area, with its myriad of well maintained gravel forestry and shire roads, is regarded as having some of the best rally stages in Australia.
