Pat an alpaca at Sherwood

ALPACA breeders from Dorrigo, Macksville and Burrapine will be among those exhibiting at Alpacas at the Vineyard, which will be held from 10am to 4pm on Saturday at the Sherwood Estate Winery near Kempsey.

Vince and Ann Henderson’s Barkala Alpacas from Dorrigo; Kerrey and Lindsay Rapley’s Keranda Alpacas from Macksville and Charlie and Sandra Vella’s Sanchavel Alpacas from Burrapine will be among 18 breeders represented.

Alpacas are now well established in Australia and no longer uncommon on the Mid North Coast. Easy to handle, breeders say they are ideal animals for smaller properties and their padded feet are kind to fragile soils.

They are more efficient feeders than either cattle or sheep so they can thrive on both native and improved pasture.

Information videos, spinning and weaving demonstrations will be on all day from 10am to 4pm.

Sherwood Estate Winery is located just west of Kempsey on Gowings Hill Road.
