Too many wrong items in recycling bins

ALMOST one in five recycling bins contain items recyclers reject.

Mackay Regional Council's audit of 3233 bins found 18.74% had minor contaminants and 8.38% major contaminants.

Councillor Laurence Bonaventura said the trend had become fairly flat.

"We did have an initial drop about 18 months ago," he said. "It's probably getting to a point where we want to know why we're not getting an improvement, so we need to look at why..."

Cr Bonaventura said major contaminants were items like rotting food scraps, whereas minor issues included recyclable items being left in plastic bags.

It would be up to council staff to look at how to get the message to the community to change the amount of non-recyclable material (in recycling bins), Cr Bonaventura said.
