Allora skipper leads Firebirds to record-breaking third win
NETBALL: Allora has the most successful captain in ANZ Championship history after the Queensland Firebirds beat New South Wales Swifts 69-67 after double overtime in the final in Brisbane this afternoon.
Played before a capacity crowd at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre at Boondall, the Firebirds beat the NSW Swifts in a nail-biting final for the second year in succession.
Straight after the game, Geitz and fellow Southern Downs player Clare McMeniman embraced, recognition the pair had been through a lot of highs and lows together.
Geitz and McMeniman both started their netball on the Southern Downs and first played together for Canberra Darters while at the AIS and then won bronze at the World Youth Championships.
Now, they have combined in defence to win three ANZ Championships. Geitz became on-court captain during the season the Firebirds first won so now has three championship medals to her credit in a leadership role.
Three wins by the Firebirds is the most at ANZ Championship level for any team.
McMeniman has also played in the three wins and the pair are also part of the Australian Diamonds team.
