Alleged prison attack kills man
A WOOLGOOLGA man died in hospital yesterday after he was allegedly bashed in his cell at Grafton Jail.
The inmate, identified as Ian Klum, was serving time for traffic offences when he was allegedly assaulted in his cell at 2.30am on Thursday.
Police said 53-year-old suffered bleeding to the head and swelling to the brain after the incident.
A 50-year-old man, possibly Mr Klum’s cellmate, has been interviewed by police over the alleged assault.
A Corrective Services spokesman said Mr Klum was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane on Friday after initial treatment at Grafton Base Hospital.
The spokesman said jail staff had already conducted an internal investigation over the matter and the victim’s family had been informed by the jail’s general manager.
Police said Mr Klum had been in a serious condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit but he died at 12.05pm yesterday.
Detectives from Coffs/Clarence Local Area Command are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s injury and death and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
