'All I heard when my baby cried was ‘you’re a terrible mum'

"ALL I heard when my baby cried was 'you're a terrible mum and you can't do this'."

Like thousands of other mums in Australia, Woodford mum of two Katie Dykes was at breaking point with her first child.

She was stressed, tired and totally burnt out.

"I got to 18 months and I was not coping at all," Katie said.

"I would look at my screaming baby and think 'your life would be so much better without me. I'm so sorry I am a bad mother'."

She packed up the car and drove to the doctor.

"When the doctor opened the door, I pushed in the pram and said 'I'm done' and walked away," Katie said.

"I couldn't do it anymore. I couldn't make her happy."

The doctor found Katie in the carpark and forced her to head back inside.

"He asked me 'so how often does she go to childcare?' and I said she didn't," Katie said.

"He told me it takes a village to raise a child - you're not supposed to do it on your own."

That was the turning point for Katie. She learnt it was okay to ask for help, and to put her child into care for a couple of days to get some rest and rebuild her sanity.

"If I could go back 5-10 years ago I would say to make yourself happy first because if you don't, it sucks the happiness and fun out of you, which sucks the happiness and fun away from my kids," Katie said.
