From builder to artist
ALEX Jankowski will open his first art exhibition at Bellingen’s Big Sky Gallery on February 27.
The self-taught painter picked up a brush for the first time less than two years ago and is revelling in a new-found creative career, which includes publishing poetry and writing a children’s book. A novel is under construction.
A life filled with art and writing may be a long way from his earlier career as a builder, nurseryman and businessman but the grandfather, who turns 68 this week, said “at my age, if you don’t try it, what the heck.”
Alex has retained the physical pleasures of creating something new and real and says the creative life brought him through the trauma of a marriage break up.
“I love colour,’ he said.
He describes his paintings as ‘3D’, saying everything is touchable.
“I build up the paint and it creates a lot of depth,” he said.
“I didn’t ask anyone – it appealed to me and I just did it.”
Alex moved away from the Coffs Coast several years ago and now lives in Newcastle but remains a regular visitor.
The opening of his exhibition at Big Sky Gallery in Bellingen’s Church Street will be held from 2pm to 6pm on February 27.
Alex’s paintings will remain on show until March 26.
