Airlie Beach boss faces $90,000 fine for rorting staff

A KOONGAL man who runs an Airlie Beach security firm is facing $90,000 in fines for underpaying four of the company's employees.

A Federal Court decision this week imposed $15,000 in fines against Douglas Charles Kidd, and a $75,000 fine against his firm Mordel Pty Ltd, which trades as Spartan Security Group.

The fines followed Mr Kidd and his company failing to respond to two compliance notices from the Fair Work Ombudsman, after complaints from two employees.

Mr Kidd's company Mordel was also ordered to pay four security guards a total of $9704 it failed to pay them for work completed in 2013.

Record-keeping laws were also breached in the case, which Ombudsman Natalie James said sent a message to other employers that failing to pay workers was "serious conduct and will not be tolerated".

Ms James said she was also concerned that after the initial warnings, the Ombudsman received more allegations of underpayment from other Mordel employees.

Those have already led to Mordel back-paying three employees more than $5000.
