CELEBRATE fatherhood in the company of nearest and dearest and take a journey away from the everyday to enjoy the special things about family. Here are A&K’s top recommendations abroad and close to home.
W.A. Winery Escape
Wine enthusiasts will relish the sun-soaked vineyards of W.A.’s Margaret River. Take a driving holiday through this spectacular part of the country, meet local winemakers and enjoy some private tastings. There’s plenty of activity to entice dads who have over indulged with hiking, canoeing, fly fishing, beach visits, mountain biking and a canopy walk all on offer nearby. Beautiful boutique lodgings are hand-picked to ensure the experience is a memorable one.
Scale the heights of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. This is a chance for husband and wife and adult children to test their skills of endurance. At 5895m it is the tallest free-standing mountain on earth but the climb requires no prior mountaineering experience. A&K’s week long journey follows the scenic Machame Route through a variety of ecosystems to the icy peak. The company’s Kilimanjaro operation offers the highest levels of safety and expertise and all its porters are endorsed by the International Porter Protection Group.
Into the Red Centre, NT
Pack up the family and head into central Australia for fun and adventure aplenty. Ride camels at sunset, hike around the base of Uluru and around the rim of Kings Canyon. Try your hand at boomerang throwing, see the Old Telegraph Station, visit local indigenous galleries, ride quad bikes on a cattle station, taste bush tucker and dine under the stars. A must for every Aussie family.
An African walking safari
Dust off the walking boots, gather the family together and head to safari central – Zambia. See what all the fuss is about at brand new Sanctuary Zebra Plains where guide extraordinaire, Garth Hovell, shares his vast knowledge of and passion for the African bush. Get as close to nature as is physically possible on an adventure-filled walking safari across the plains of the South Luangwa National Park, down sandy trails, across dry stream beds and over rivers. Share tales over the camp fire each night.
Adventure in Nepal
Take a safari of a different kind with tigers the main motivation. The mountain nation of Nepal has some of the sub-continent’s finest national parks and best sightings of the endangered Royal Bengal tiger. At Chitwan, tiger viewing is done on elephant back with experienced naturalist guides for company. There are also river safaris and traditional jeep drives through the park. Whilst in the area a private trek through the Annapurna foothills is easily arranged and time spent in the capital, Kathmandu, is an unforgettable experience.
